Safety is a complex concept that, depending on the subject of reference, whether it’s an individual or an environment, assumes a dual meaning: one related to “value” and the other to technical aspects. The former can be defined as the “ethics of individual and social responsibility,” encompassing how individuals and communities safeguard their interests and values in response to primary needs like education, health, sustainable development, and social cohesion.
The latter can be understood as the planning and control of conditions that ensure and make one feel safe from potential hazards. Of course, we are not referring to absolute safety, which is the complete absence of risks and dangers, as it remains an impractical concept in real life. However, by implementing safety measures, we can significantly reduce the occurrence of harmful events and accidents, leading to an improved quality of life.
When it comes to achieving the goal of safety, two aspects play crucial roles: prevention and protection.
Prevention includes all the planned and executed actions aimed at eliminating or reducing the chances of undesired events. On the other hand, protection involves defending against potential harm, often involving elements or actions that act as barriers between individuals and the potential sources of danger.
